WHAT IS ISR?
Infant Swimming Resource is a nationally recognized program that teaches infants and young children the skills they need to survive if they end up in the water alone. ISR is the safest provider of swimming lessons for infants and young children nationwide, and the ISR Self-Rescue technique is also supported by medical experts around the country.

LESSON DESCRIPTION
Lessons are delivered in ten-minute trainings, five days per week, Monday through Friday, for four to six weeks. Students are gently guided through every skill level, learning to master each ISR Self-Rescue technique in swimming attire, and while fully clothed.

WHAT WILL MY CHILD LEARN?
Infants 6 to 12 months learn the following skills:
    • Hold their breath underwater
    • Roll onto their back
    • Float unassisted to rest and breathe until help arrives
    • To perform these skills first in a swim diaper/bathing suit and then while fully clothed

Infants over 1 year learn the following sequence:
    • Hold their breath underwater
    • Swim with their head down
    • Roll onto their back to float, rest, and breathe
    • Roll back over to resume swimming until they reach the side of the pool and can crawl out or be rescued by an adult.
    • To perform these skills first in a swim diaper/bathing suit and then while fully clothed

    MAINTENANCE LESSONS:
Upon completion of the initial lessons, regular fine-tuning of your child's skills is highly recommended.  Maintenance lessons can be once a week or once a month. Maintenance lessons can alleviate the need for a full refresher later.

    REFRESHER CLASSES:
Upon completion of their initial lessons, ISR recommends that each child take a short 2-3 week refresher course to help them adjust their skills to their new body size in the water, and that skills be re-evaluated every 6-12 months after the initial lesson set.

ISR lessons are an additional layer of protection! No child is ever "drown-proofed", and there is no substitute for parental supervision!

A MESSAGE TO PARENTS

Picture

Many parents don’t realize the dangers of introducing young children to water before they know how to save their lives in an unexpected water encounter. Before your baby can feel confident to safely enjoy the water, he or she must first learn the skills needed for Self-Rescue. ISR is the safest provider of infant and toddler swimming lessons nationwide. Using instruction techniques based on the behavioral sciences, ISR teaches each child survival swimming skills in conjunction with basic swimming lessons that give them the competence required to safely enjoy the water.

Every day a child in the U.S. reaches the water unsupervised and ends up in a potential drowning situation. Parental complacency happens to even the best parents, and is extremely dangerous – every time your baby doesn’t fall into the water it can reinforce the idea that they can be left alone for “just a second” – until they can’t and it’s already too late. The best safeguard is not to rely on your baby’s past behavior, but to equip your baby with critical ISR Self-Rescue skills. One of ISR’s goals is to help parents make sure their young children can perform survival swimming techniques, and have the opportunity to learn them in conjunction with basic swimming skills.

Watching your children is not enough, nor are pool safety gates able to protect them from every hazardous water situation. Parents must provide their children with the final layer of protection in the unfortunate event that supervision lapses – even momentarily -- and a child ends up in the water alone. ISR’s proven methodology is this final layer, and teaches your baby ISR Self-Rescue skills in a completely safe environment to give him or her water competence to safely play in and around the water and to mitigate the risk of drowning.
